Tim Curry’s Cause of Death Revealed: Actor Died From Coronary Artery Disease at 80

The cause of death for actor and performer Tim Curry has been confirmed, one week after the Rocky Horror Picture Show star died at age 80.

According to People magazine, Curry’s primary cause of death was coronary artery disease. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health also listed his history of stroke and kidney cancer as contributing factors.

Curry’s death marks the end of a career that stretched across stage, film, television and voice acting, with performances that made him one of the most recognizable character actors of his generation.

A stroke changed the final chapter of his career

Curry experienced a near-fatal stroke in 2012. Doctors discovered two blood clots in his brain and performed emergency surgery.

The stroke left the left side of his body paralyzed, and Curry subsequently relied on a wheelchair. He also lost his ability to speak for several weeks.

His voice eventually returned after extensive rehabilitation, but the physical effects of the stroke remained. Rather than stepping away from entertainment altogether, Curry increasingly turned his attention toward voice acting, allowing him to continue working despite the limitations to his mobility.

That adaptability became an important part of the later years of his career.

Curry spoke openly about living with disability

Curry rarely pretended that his recovery had been easy.

At a 50th-anniversary screening of The Rocky Horror Picture Show in September 2025, he spoke candidly about still being unable to walk and the restrictions that came with his condition.

“I still can't walk, which is why I'm in this silly chair, and that's very limiting,” Curry said.

He also acknowledged that singing and dancing—two abilities central to some of his most famous performances—were no longer realistic options. His left leg continued to cause significant problems.

His comments offered a glimpse into the reality of surviving a devastating stroke: recovery can restore some abilities without returning a person to their previous physical life.

He had already made peace with the idea of death

Curry was similarly direct when discussing mortality.

In an interview last year, he told Ben Mankiewicz that he did not fear death and suggested that he might ultimately welcome it.

That outlook was also reflected in his 2025 memoir, Vagabond. Writing about the fear and uncertainty he experienced after his stroke, Curry described the possibility of a peaceful death as something that did not necessarily frighten him.

His reflections are notable because they came from someone who had experienced just how suddenly life could change. The stroke had forced him to confront vulnerability at a relatively young age, followed by years of rehabilitation and adaptation.

Curry continued working almost to the end

Despite the lasting effects of his stroke, Curry did not completely retreat from acting.

His last credited role was in the 2024 horror film Stream. He also filmed scenes for Stream 2: Sudden Death, giving him one final screen appearance before his death.

Director Michael Leavy said the sequel will be dedicated to Curry. Because Curry had already completed his scenes, audiences will still have an opportunity to see one of his final performances.

A career far bigger than one iconic role

For many viewers, Curry will forever be associated with Dr. Frank-N-Furter in The Rocky Horror Picture Show, the flamboyant role that turned him into a cultural icon.

But his career extended well beyond that film. He worked extensively in theater, movies, television and animation, building a reputation for performances that could be simultaneously theatrical, eccentric, menacing and darkly funny.

His later transition into voice work was particularly significant. When physical performance became difficult after his stroke, his voice remained a powerful part of his craft, enabling him to continue contributing to films, television and other projects.
