Well, it's finally official: The Blade movie is dead

When Marvel Studios announced a new Blade movie at San Diego Comic-Con in 2019, it was one of the most exciting reveals of the event. The project was driven by Oscar-winning actor Mahershala Ali, who personally approached Marvel with the idea of reviving the iconic vampire hunter. Expectations were high, but nearly seven years later, the film appears to have reached its end before cameras ever rolled.

Mahershala Ali: "We're Not Doing the Movie"

In a recent interview with GQ Magazine, Ali made his clearest comments yet about the fate of the project, indicating that he has moved on after years of delays and uncertainty.

Laughing off the long-running questions, Ali said:

"I'm good. You had me under contract, Marvel Studios have billions of dollars. If they wanted to do the movie, we would've done the movie. So we're not doing the movie. I feel ready to move on from the Blade questions. Those questions are for them. They didn't want to do it, so they should answer that question."

His remarks strongly suggest that the long-awaited reboot is no longer moving forward in its original form.

A Project Stuck in Development Hell

Since its announcement in 2019, Blade has faced repeated creative setbacks, making it one of Marvel Studios' most troubled productions.

The project initially assembled an impressive creative team, with Watchmen writer Stacy Osei-Kuffour attached to write the screenplay and Mogul Mowgli director Bassam Tariq set to direct. Production was expected to begin in 2022 for a planned 2023 theatrical release.

However, those plans quickly unraveled when Tariq exited the project in 2022.

Marvel then brought in several new writers and directors in an effort to reshape the film. X-Men '97 writer Beau DeMayo contributed rewrites before Lovecraft Country director Yann Demange took over directing duties.

Reports later suggested that the story had evolved into a female-led ensemble, with Blade playing more of a mentor than the central protagonist. According to industry reports, Ali was unhappy with that creative direction, prompting Marvel to commission another rewrite from True Detective writer Nic Pizzolatto.

More Delays and Creative Changes

The project suffered another major setback in 2023 when the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes halted production across Hollywood. Even after the strikes ended, reports indicated that Marvel still had not finalized a script.

The ongoing uncertainty led to further departures. Veteran actor Delroy Lindo left the film in 2024 after years of delays, and director Yann Demange also exited the project shortly afterward.

Marvel made one final attempt to revive the film by bringing in Fantastic Four: First Steps and Thor: Ragnarok writer Eric Pearson for another rewrite. Despite those efforts, the studio eventually removed Blade from Disney's theatrical release calendar, leaving its future in doubt.

Kevin Feige Admits the Project Never Came Together

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige recently addressed the troubled production on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, acknowledging the studio's inability to deliver the film.

Feige admitted he felt "like a gigantic loser and failure" for not getting the project made with Mahershala Ali.

He explained that Marvel wanted the reboot to be more than just another superhero film featuring Blade fighting vampires.

"We didn't want to simply just put a leather outfit on him and have him start killing vampires. It had to be unique."

According to Feige, Marvel eventually adopted a stricter approach to development, deciding to move forward only with projects they believed were "insanely great."

While the studio often refines scripts during production, Feige said Marvel lacked confidence that Blade could be successfully improved that way and ultimately chose not to proceed.

The End of an Ambitious Reboot?

Although Marvel Studios has not officially canceled Blade, Mahershala Ali's comments make it increasingly difficult to believe the original reboot will ever happen.

What began in 2019 as one of the MCU's most anticipated announcements has instead become one of its longest-running development stories—marked by multiple rewrites, changing creative visions, director departures, production delays, and years of uncertainty.

For now, the future of Marvel's legendary vampire hunter remains unknown.
