Republic Day is a national festival which is celebrated on 26th of January every year. The Constitution was implemented on 26 January 1950 by repealing the Government of India Act (Act) (1935). The campaign to get India full republic status was presided over by the country's first prime minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. The resolution to make India a full republic was presented at the Lahore Congress session on January 26, 1929. However, the British government rejected this proposal of the Congress.
